2025 Annual Pilgrimage
October 11, 2025
Good afternoon, everyone,
The Point Lookout Memorial Service and Descendants meeting is less than three weeks away, Saturday, October 11th.
We need an estimated headcount to buy flowers and lunch. Please let us know if you will be attending.
The Service starts at 11:00 am at Confederate Memorial Park. The Descendants will follow the Color Guard to the Point Lookout Confederate Federal Cemetery for prayer and flower laying.
Color Guard and Handicap parking will be in the front entrance of Confederate Memorial Park. Everyone else, please come to the back entrance and park in the field. If anyone needs help, please let us know and someone will shuttle them.
What has been happening....
Well, thanks to several of CMP INC. board members and volunteers, Bill, Paul, Bruce, John, Nick, Rose, Stephanie, TJ, Dennis, Barb, Judy, Debbie and Roz, many projects have been completed at Confederate Memorial Park. After 11 gallons of stain, 212 bags of mulch, 1250 screws and a lot of determination, we completed the Smallpox Consolidated Cemetery Fence. Thanks to The Children of the Confederacy for helping raise funds, everyone that donated to this project and several CMP Inc board members the fence came out beautiful. The fence stands out and visitors now ask, “what is in the fence enclosure?” Pam, our webmaster, has added pictures on our website of the progression of the construction of the fence and projects we have completed this year. A few pictures below.
Also, with a lot of muscle and digging, Confederate Memorial Park now has a 100-foot-long flagstone walkway from the parking lot to the Grace Church Monument.
In between, taking down the huge pine tree in the women’s section, making wreaths, planting flowers, grass cutting and weed eating, The New Maryland Monument has a walkway that encircles the Monument ready to receive memorial bricks for Maryland soldiers. We will add pictures on our website after the dedication of the monument on October 11th.
And finally, four of the original posts recovered from the Confederate Cemetery on Tanner Creek were cemented in the ground behind the informational signage about them. The recent brick order that was given to our supplier back in June has been delayed. The supplier had a problem obtaining blank bricks. We were in touch with them about a week ago and we were told the memorial bricks should be delivered soon.
We have lost many supporters in the last year. Please pray for them and their families. Jimmy Cochran, Tom Dale, Bob Harper, Doug Barrett, Elliot Cummings and recently Doris Dorsey. Doris gave us permission to view her Great Grandfather, Charles Abell Heard, field notes and if it were not for Doris, the smallpox consolidated cemetery would have gone unknown.
If anyone has any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the Point Lookout Memorial Service and Descendants meeting.
Please let us know if you will be attending the Memorial Service and luncheon.
Always For Their Memory,
Jim and Christina Dunbar Chairmen
Confederate Memorial Park Inc.
